Nightweed band started a little differently from most others. Keith decided he was tired of the standard musicians so, rather than choose from the local players, he chose good friends who really wanted to play and waited until they were ready. By the time he finished film school, they were definitely ready. Normally Keith first comes up with the rhythm guitar chords or bass line and Alicia writes the lyrics. The two of them then work together to finalize the song’s structure. Afterward, Rick learns the rhythm guitar parts while Keith goes into the studio to record a submix of the bass and keyboards for their live shows. |
About Nightweed.... Funky bass lines, metal rhythms, and the occasional sax solo help define the Phoenix rock band Nightweed. Frontman Keith plays bass, keyboards, drums, sax, and guitar. He just finished four years of film school and is looking forward to making music videos for the band. Rick, on rhythm guitar, is a local actor as well as a locksmith. Alicia a.k.a. Angry Girl is Nightweed’s drummer and lyricist. Since Nightweed is completely independent, each song is allowed to have its own sound. For example, “Fire in Your Eyes” is a keyboard-based song that Alicia came up with, while Keith wrote the lyrics. “Running” is something Keith wrote while trying to come up with something totally different, and nobody in the band knows what genre it is. While Nightweed’s songs tend to reflect the angst and frustrations of a world out of balance, its members hope to spread a planet-friendly message. Rick is a vegetarian and Keith and Alicia are vegans and all three study traditional Shaolin kung fu. They dream of the day when they can quit their day jobs and just play music for a living. Meanwhile, they are in the studio, recording the final tracks for their new song “Ain’t no Velvet Elvis” and storyboarding the video for it. Nightweed plans to release a three-song EP in the next couple months. And come see us play at College Dropouts in Tempe |
